Best ServiceM8 alternatives for Australian tradies
ServiceM8 is priced unlike almost anything else in the Australian market: you pay for monthly job volume, and users are unlimited on every paid tier. That single fact decides whether a ServiceM8 alternative will save you money or cost you more — and most comparison pages never mention it. This one leads with it.
The head-to-head most Australian tradies run first is ServiceM8 vs Tradify, and the honest ServiceM8 cost comparison depends entirely on the ratio between your headcount and your monthly job count — section three works that through with real numbers.
Ten alternatives below, listed alphabetically, each with what it is genuinely good at and a stated limitation. Ownership disclosure: Opsler publishes this page and is one of the ten. It sits seventh, in alphabetical order like everyone else, and its limitations are stated in the same table as everybody else’s. Full plan detail for ServiceM8 itself lives on our ServiceM8 pricing page rather than being duplicated here.
How we selected and verified each alternative
Four criteria, published so you can check them. Each product had to be sold to Australian field-service businesses, cover more than one step of the enquiry-to-invoice workflow, be plausible for a team under about fifty people, and publish enough on its own site for us to describe it accurately.
Every figure below was taken from the vendor’s own Australian pages on 4 August 2026. Nothing comes from a review directory or a comparison aggregator — those go stale silently, and stale prices in this market are worse than no prices. Where a vendor publishes nothing, the table says “Not published” rather than estimating.
Ordering is alphabetical. That is the entire criterion, and it is why Opsler appears seventh rather than first. The segment sections below do the actual recommending, and they recommend different products to different businesses — including recommending that you stay on ServiceM8.
One vendor we could not re-check
Simpro’s pricing pages returned a 403 error on every attempt on 4 August 2026. Its entry draws on research dated 30 July 2026 and is flagged as the least fresh here. Confirm it directly.
ServiceM8 baseline: best fit and common switch triggers
ServiceM8’s Australian pricing as at 4 August 2026: Free at A$0 for one user and 30 jobs a month; Starter A$29 for 50 jobs with 100 SMS; Growing A$79 for 150 jobs with 300 SMS; Premium A$149 for 500 jobs with 1,000 SMS; Premium Plus A$349 for 1,500-plus jobs with 3,000 SMS, plus 20c per job beyond that. Extra SMS is 10c. A Phone add-on starts at A$19 a month. Unlimited staff accounts on every paid tier.
Where it is genuinely excellent: a business with more people than jobs. Six technicians running 120 jobs a month pay A$79. On per-user pricing that same team would pay A$312 on Tradify Pro. That is not a marginal difference and no alternative on this page beats it for that shape of business.
Four reasons Australian teams switch away, in rough order of how often they come up:
- Job credits do not roll over. A credit is used when the job is created — including a job that starts as a quote — and unused credits expire at month end. Seasonal businesses pay for capacity in quiet months and hit the ceiling in busy ones.
- The tier steps are large. A$79 to A$149 is an 89% increase for crossing 150 jobs. If you sit near a boundary, your bill is volatile in a way per-user pricing is not.
- Platform. ServiceM8’s own Australian materials centre on iOS, iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple CarPlay. Teams on Android fleets should verify the current state of Android support directly before assuming parity — see section eight.
- The work outgrew the shape. Staged projects, asset registers, stock across a workshop — different category, covered in section seven.
If none of those describe you, staying put is a perfectly good outcome of reading this page.
Comparison table: users, jobs, devices, SMS and accounting
Ten alternatives, alphabetically. The “Charged by” column is the one that matters — it is what makes a A$29 product more expensive than a A$48 one for some businesses and half the price for others.
| Alternative | Charged by | Published price | Devices | Accounting | Best fit | Stated limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AroFlo | Custom quote | Not published | Native iOS + Android | Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks | Asset registers, compliance records and project work alongside jobs | No published price — a demo is the only route to a number |
| Ascora | Custom quote | Not published | Native iOS + Android, offline field app | Two-way Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks | 5–50 technicians running multi-stage or multi-crew work | Pitched above sole-trader tools, and publishes no pricing |
| Fergus | Per plan | From A$53–A$77/month | Native iOS + Android | Automatic Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks sync | Crews of 1–20 wanting supplier invoice matching and progress claims | Published prices start "from", so your real figure needs a quote |
| Formitize | Per user | A$29.99/user/month ex GST | Native iOS + Android | Not stated on the pricing page | Safety documents, compliance forms and paperless sign-off | Industry packs are priced outside the base per-user figure |
| Jobber | Per plan, user bands | US$29–US$699/month | Native iOS + Android | Accounting integrations available | Mature, heavily documented product with deep support material | Its own Australian pricing page states all prices are in USD |
| NextMinute | Per plan, user bands | From A$199–A$349/month ex GST | Native iOS + Android | Two-way Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks | Residential construction with takeoffs, variations and cost tracking | Entry plan starts at 3 users — poor value below that |
| Opsler | Per seat | US$25/seat/month | Browser-installed — no app store listing | Formatted CSV export, manual import | Small teams wanting one price per person and a genuinely free plan; Pro adds route optimisation and milestone GPS stamps | Billed in USD, no SMS, no live vehicle tracking, and accounting is an export not a sync |
| Simpro | Custom quote + setup fee | Not published | Native mobile | Accounting integrations available | Commercial contractors with projects, assets, stock and multi-company needs | No public numeric price and an implementation project before go-live |
| Tradify | Per user | A$48–A$62/user/month ex GST | Web + native iOS + Android | Two-way Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks | Teams wanting AUD pricing, native apps and SMS in one product | Per-user pricing scales with headcount; SMS is A$0.20 a message on top |
| WorkGuru | Platform + per user | A$350/month incl. 10 users | Mobile and kiosk apps | Not stated on the pricing page | Fabrication and workshop businesses needing job costing with field work | Inventory, automation and forms are separately priced modules |
Checked 4 August 2026 on each vendor’s own Australian pages, except Simpro (403 error; research dated 30 July 2026). None of these vendors meters job volume the way ServiceM8 does — it is the only one on this list where your job count changes the bill.
Alternatives for sole tradies and very small teams
At one or two people the deciding factor is whether the monthly cost is proportionate to a quiet month. Three options worth weighing against ServiceM8’s Free and Starter tiers.
Opsler
The Budding plan is free forever and shaped for two people rather than one: 1 admin and 1 technician, 50 jobs a month, unlimited customers, 100 inventory items in 1 location and 21 core features. Compare that to ServiceM8’s Free tier, which is one user and 30 jobs — the moment a partner starts doing the books, ServiceM8 moves you to A$29 and Opsler does not. Beyond that it is US$25 per seat per month with no seat minimum, and Pro adds route optimisation — a manual re-sequence of one technician’s day with promised appointment times left anchored — plus GPS location stamps captured at en route, arrived and complete. The honest downsides: billed in US dollars, no SMS at all, no live vehicle tracking, and accounting is an export you import yourself rather than a sync.
Formitize
A$29.99 per user per month excluding GST — the lowest published per-user price here, from an Australian-headquartered company. It is the right answer if your real bottleneck is safety documents, compliance forms and getting paperwork signed rather than scheduling. Industry packs sit outside the base price, so confirm what your trade needs before comparing it like-for-like.
Tradify
A$48 per user per month ex GST on Lite, with a 14-day trial and no card. For a single operator that is more than ServiceM8 Starter — but it comes with unlimited jobs, native apps on both platforms, AUD pricing and two-way accounting sync. If you are a sole tradie doing high job volume, Tradify is frequently cheaper than ServiceM8 despite the higher headline: 400 jobs a month costs A$48 on Tradify Lite and A$149 on ServiceM8 Premium.
Alternatives for growing service teams
Between three and twenty people, ServiceM8’s unlimited-users model is at its strongest, so an alternative has to win on something other than price. These three do.
Fergus
Australian-focused and built for crews of 1–20, from A$53 a month on Essentials and A$77 on Pro, month to month with no setup fee and no lock-in. What it does that ServiceM8 does not: supplier invoice matching, integrations with 100-plus Australian suppliers, and job phases for progress claims. If reconciling supplier bills against jobs is eating an afternoon a week, that is the whole argument.
Ascora
Australian since 2009 and explicitly built for 5–50 technicians running complex work: multi-crew dispatch, multi-stage quoting, real-time job profitability, digital SWMS and JSA forms, an offline-capable field app and two-way accounting sync. A 14-day trial with no card. It publishes no pricing, which is the cost of admission — you cannot compare it on price without a conversation.
Tradify
At this size the maths flips depending on your job count. Five people on Tradify Pro is A$260 a month ex GST regardless of volume; the same five on ServiceM8 pay A$79 at 150 jobs and A$149 at 500. Tradify wins on very high volume and on wanting native apps plus AUD pricing plus SMS in one product; ServiceM8 wins on headcount. Run both numbers for your actual month — the answer is rarely the one people assume.
Alternatives for project, asset or compliance-heavy work
ServiceM8 is a job product. Once your work has stages, retentions, an equipment register or a workshop behind it, no amount of job-management software will fit — you need a different category, with different pricing and a real implementation phase.
Simpro
The deepest option most Australian commercial contractors consider: projects, assets, inventory, multi-company structures. Pricing is a personalised quote with an initial setup fee scaled to implementation complexity and add-ons priced separately. Its pricing pages could not be re-fetched on 4 August 2026, so verify directly. Expect procurement, not a signup form.
AroFlo
Australian-made, spanning sole traders to teams of 40-plus, with asset management, compliance, inventory, GPS tracking and project work types alongside the standard job lifecycle. Native apps on both platforms; integrates with Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks, Stripe and Square. Publishes no pricing.
WorkGuru
For fabrication, manufacturing and trade service businesses running a workshop as well as field work. A$350 a month covers the platform including 10 team members, with extra members at A$35 each; inventory and stock control (+A$300/month), an automation suite (+A$200/month) and digital forms (+A$150/month) are separate modules. Compare your fully configured price, not the headline.
NextMinute
Built for residential construction firms with 3-plus staff: Gantt scheduling, takeoff imports, variation management and cost tracking. Tradie Growth from A$199 a month for 3–9 users, Tradie Pro A$349 for 10–14, Tradie Max custom above that, all AUD excluding GST.
Android, browser-installed app and offline evaluation
Device support is the second most common reason Australian tradies look past ServiceM8, and it is worth being precise rather than repeating hearsay. Search ServiceM8 Android and you will find a decade of forum threads and ServiceM8 reviews arguing about it — most of them out of date.
What ServiceM8 publishes
ServiceM8’s own Australian pricing comparison, checked on 4 August 2026, references iOS, iPhone, iPad, a Mac and PC app, and Apple CarPlay integration. If your team runs Android phones, verify the current state of Android support directly with ServiceM8 before committing — platform support is exactly the kind of thing that changes, and it deserves a direct answer rather than an inference from a comparison page.
Where the alternatives sit
AroFlo, Ascora, Fergus, Formitize, Jobber, NextMinute and Tradify all publish native iOS and Android apps. If a store-listed Android app is a hard requirement, any of those clears it.
Opsler answers the question differently: it installs from the browser onto any modern device, so an Android phone, an iPhone, a tablet and a desktop all run the identical product. There is no Google Play listing and nothing to download. The upside for a mixed-device team is one behaviour to learn and no version drift; the downside is that there is no store presence at all, which some businesses specifically want.
Offline — test it, do not read about it
“Works offline” is the most oversold phrase in this category. Ascora describes an offline-capable field app. Opsler’s verified offline scope is deliberately narrow: technicians can create estimates and invoices with no signal, and those sync on reconnect — assume anything else needs a connection. The only way to compare honestly is to put each product in flight mode and try the three things your team does most, then reconnect and check all three arrived. Ten minutes, on every shortlisted product.
Pricing, GST and migration checks
GST — an open question on ServiceM8’s own pages
Worth stating plainly because it affects every number in this comparison: ServiceM8’s published Australian pages checked on 4 August 2026 do not state whether the prices shown include or exclude GST. Tradify, NextMinute and Formitize all label their prices Ex GST. Jobber notes that prices exclude sales tax where applicable. That gap is a real one — confirm it with ServiceM8 or at checkout rather than assuming either way, because 10% across an annual subscription is not a rounding error.
Currency
ServiceM8, Tradify, Fergus, NextMinute, Formitize and WorkGuru all publish AUD. Jobber’s own Australian pricing page states all prices are in USD, and Opsler bills in USD at US$25 per seat per month without converting. If a stable Australian-dollar line item matters, that narrows your list immediately.
Accounting — the word “integration” does real damage here
Ascora, Fergus, NextMinute, Tradify and AroFlo all describe two-way syncing with Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks. Opsler produces QuickBooks-formatted and Xero-formatted CSV files that you import yourself — no live connection, nothing posting automatically. Both get described as “working with Xero.” Ask every vendor the same blunt question: does an invoice raised at 4pm appear in my accounting software without anyone touching it?
Do the crossover arithmetic before anything else
One calculation settles most of this page. Take your actual headcount and your actual monthly job count, then price both models. On ServiceM8 the bill is set by the job band alone: 40 jobs and 400 jobs are A$29 and A$149 respectively, whether you have two staff or twelve. On per-user pricing the bill is set by headcount alone: two people are A$96 on Tradify Lite and twelve are A$576, whatever your volume. Plot your own business on both and the answer is usually unambiguous — and frequently the opposite of what the headline prices suggest.
Then stress-test it against next year rather than this month. A team that adds two technicians without adding jobs saves nothing on per-user pricing and nothing changes on ServiceM8. A team whose job count doubles while headcount holds steady sees the reverse. Whichever direction your business is actually moving is the one your pricing model should be cheapest in.
Migration
Before you move in, establish how you would move out. Can you export customers, jobs, quotes and invoices without raising a support ticket? Do historical job photos come with the export? What happens to your records if you cancel? Ask ServiceM8 the same questions about getting your existing history out. The answers are a decent proxy for how a vendor will treat you generally.
Frequently asked questions about ServiceM8 alternatives
There is no single best, and the reason is structural rather than diplomatic. ServiceM8 prices by monthly job volume with unlimited users on every paid tier — A$29 for 50 jobs, A$79 for 150, A$149 for 500, A$349 for 1,500 or more. Almost every alternative prices by user or by plan instead. That means the right alternative depends entirely on the ratio between your headcount and your job count. A six-person team running 60 jobs a month is being served extremely well by ServiceM8 and will pay more almost anywhere else. A two-person team running 400 jobs is paying A$149 and would pay A$104 on Tradify Lite. Work out your ratio before you read another comparison.
Four reasons come up repeatedly. First, job credits: a credit is consumed when a job is created, unused credits expire monthly rather than rolling over, and a couple of busy months push you up a tier you then pay for during a quiet one. Second, platform: ServiceM8's own Australian materials centre on iOS, iPad, Mac and Apple CarPlay, and businesses running Android fleets find the experience uneven — worth verifying the current state directly, since this is exactly the sort of thing that changes. Third, the ceiling: once work involves staged projects, asset registers or stock across a workshop, ServiceM8 is the wrong shape and AroFlo, Simpro or WorkGuru are the right one. Fourth, headcount economics running in reverse — a small team with very high job volume eventually finds per-user pricing cheaper.
On Android: AroFlo, Ascora, Fergus, Formitize, Jobber, NextMinute and Tradify all publish native Android apps as well as iOS. Opsler takes a different route again — it installs from the browser onto any modern device, so Android, iPhone, tablet and desktop all get the identical product, but there is no Google Play listing at all. On job limits: ServiceM8 is the only vendor here that meters job volume as its pricing lever; everyone else charges by user or by plan and does not cap your job count. On SMS: ServiceM8 bundles an allowance into every paid tier (100 on Starter up to 3,000 on Premium Plus, then 10c a message) and Tradify charges A$0.20 a message with no bundle. Opsler does not send SMS at all — it is a planned bring-your-own-provider integration and is not live, which is a straightforward reason to stay with ServiceM8 if texting customers is load-bearing.
Every price here is a dated snapshot from 4 August 2026, not a live feed. Re-check the two or three products you actually shortlist on their own websites — including ServiceM8 — before you commit to anything.
