## Definition

Field service management software manages work performed at a customer's location.
It holds the service request, the schedule and assignment, the technician's work on
site, the record of what was done, and the estimate and invoice that follow —
connected as a single job rather than scattered across a calendar, a phone and an
accounting package.

The defining constraint is distance: the person doing the work is not in the
building where the work is planned, so information has to travel both ways.

## What counts as field service

Three tests: the work happens at the customer's premises; a specific person is sent
at a specific time; the visit is the unit of work that starts, finishes and gets
billed. Excludes multi-month construction projects and delivery routes.

## The seven-stage lifecycle

request arrives -> scheduled -> technician briefed -> work documented -> priced and
approved -> invoiced -> becomes history on the customer record.

Live GPS, AI dispatch, route optimization, predictive maintenance, payroll, live
